The past perfect, also called the pluperfect, is a verb tense used to talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past.
Past perfect tense, pluperfect అని కూడా పిలువబడుతుంది, ఇది గతంలో ఏదో ఒక సమయంలో పూర్తి చేసిన చర్యల గురించి మాట్లాడటానికి ఉపయోగించే verb tense.

The past perfect tense is for talking about something that happened before something else.
Past perfect tense అనేది ఏదైనా జరగడానికి ముందు జరిగిన దాని గురించి మాట్లాడడడానికి ఉపయోగపడుతుంది.

This tense talks about the "past in the past".
ఈ tenseలో "గతంలోని గతం" గురించి మాట్లాడడం జరుగుతుంది.

Examples:

The train left at 9am. We arrived at 9:15am. When we arrived, the train had left.
ఉదయం 9 గంటలకు రైలు బయలుదేరింది. మేము 9:15 గంటలకు చేరుకున్నాము. మేము వచ్చేసరికి, రైలు బయలుదేరింది.

The train had left when we arrived.
మేము వచ్చేసరికి రైలు వెళ్లిపోయింది.

I wasn't hungry. I had just eaten.
నాకు ఆకలిగా లేదు. నేను అప్నటికే తినేసాను.

They were hungry. They had not eaten for five hours.
వారు ఆకలితో ఉండిరి. వారు ఐదు గంటలుగా ఏమీ తినలేదు.

The Past Perfect Formula

The formula for the past perfect tense is had + [past participle].
Past perfect tense యొక్క ఫార్ములా had + [past participle].

It doesn’t matter if the subject is singular or plural; the formula doesn’t change.
Subject అనేది ఏకవచనంలో ఉందా లేదా బహువచనంలో ఉందా అనే విషయాన్ని మనం పట్టించుకోవలసిన అవసరం లేదు. ఎలా ఉన్నా ఫార్ములా మారదు.

When to Use the Past Perfect

Past Perfectను ఎప్పుడు ఉపయోగించాలి

So what’s the difference between past perfect and simple past?
అయితే past perfect మరియు simple pastల మధ్య తేడా ఏమిటి?

When you’re talking about some point in the past and want to reference an event that happened even earlier, using the past perfect allows you to convey the sequence of the events.
మీరు గతంలో ఏదో ఒక విషయం గురించి మాట్లాడుతున్నప్పుడు మరియు ఇంతకు ముందు జరిగిన సంఘటనను ప్రస్తావించాలనుకున్నప్పుడు, past perfectను ఉపయోగించడం వలన ఆ సంఘటనల క్రమాన్ని తెలియజేయడానికి మీకు అవకాశం కలుగుతుంది.

Another time to use the past perfect is when you are expressing a condition and a result.
Past perfectను ఉపయోగించడానికి మరొక సందర్భం ఏమిటంటే దీనిని మీరు ఒక షరతు మరియు ఫలితాన్ని గురించి వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నప్పుడు కూడా ఉపయోగించవచ్చు.

The past perfect is used in the part of the sentence that explains the condition (the if-clause).
వాక్యం యొక్క నిబంధనలను (if-clause) గురించి వివరించే భాగంలో past perfect ఉపయోగించబడుతుంది.  (if-clause).

Most often, the reason to write a verb in the past perfect tense is to show that it happened before other actions in the same sentence that are described by verbs in the simple past tense.

పదే పదే ఈ verbను past perfect tenseలో వ్రాయడానికి గల  కారణం ఏమిటంటే Simple past tenseలో verbs ద్వారా వివరించబడిన అదే వాక్యములోని ముందు జరిగిన ఇతర చర్యలను చూపంచడం కోసం.

Writing an entire paragraph with every verb in the past perfect tense is unusual.
సాధారణంగా మనం మొత్తం పేరాలోని ప్రతి క్రియను Past perfect tenseలో వ్రాయము.

You can sometimes think of the Past Perfect tense like the Present Perfect tense, but instead of the time being now the time is before.
మీరు కొన్నిసార్లు Past Perfect tenseను Present Perfect tense మాదిరిగా ఆలోచించవచ్చు, కానీ ఇప్పుడు ఉన్న సమయానికి బదులుగా ఇంతకు ముందు సమయంగా ఉంటుంది.

For example, imagine that you arrive at the station at 9:15am. The stationmaster says to you:
ఉదాహరణకు, మీరు ఉదయం 9:15 గంటలకు స్టేషన్‌కు చేరుకుంటారని ఊహించుకోండి. స్టేషన్‌మాస్టర్ మీతో ఇలా అంటాడు:

  • You are too late. The train has left.
  • మీరు చాలా ఆలస్యం చేసారు. రైలు (ఇప్పుడే) బయలుదేరింది.

Later, you tell your friends:
తరువాత, మీరు మీ స్నేహితులకు ఇలా చెబుతారు:

  • We were too late. The train had left.
  • మేము చాలా ఆలస్యం చేశాము. రైలు (అప్పటికే) వెళ్లిపోయింది.

When Not to Use the Past Perfect

Past Perfectను ఎప్పుడు ఉపయోగించకూడదు

Don’t use the past perfect when you’re not trying to convey some sequence of events.
మీరు కొన్ని సంఘటనల క్రమాన్ని తెలియజేయడానికి ప్రయత్నించనప్పుడు past perfectను ఉపయోగించవద్దు.

Example:
I had cleaned it off the door.
నేను తలుపు పై ఉన్న దానిని శుభ్రం చేసాను.

They’d likely be wondering what happened next because using the past perfect implies that your action of cleaning the door occurred before something else happened, but you don’t say what that something else is.
తరువాత ఏమి జరిగిందో అని వినేవారు ఆశ్చర్యపోవచ్చు, ఎందుకంటే past perfect ను ఉపయోగించడం వలన మీ తలుపు శుభ్రపరిచే చర్య వేరొక పని జరగక ముందే జరిగిందని సూచిస్తుంది, కానీ అది ఏమిటో మీరు ఇక్కడ చెప్పడం లేదు.

The “something else” doesn’t always have to be explicitly mentioned, but context needs to make it clear.
"వేరొక పని" గురించి ఎల్లప్పుడూ స్పష్టంగా పేర్కొనబడనవసరం లేదు, కానీ అది ఏ సందర్భంలో జరిగింది అనేది స్పష్టం చేయాలి.

In this case there’s no context, so the past perfect doesn’t make sense.
ఈ సందర్భంలో అది ఏ సందర్భంలో జరిగిందో వివరించలేదు, కాబట్టి ఈ past perfect tense వాక్యం అర్థవంతంగా లేదు.

ఉదాహరణకు, we'd can అంటే అర్థం ఈ క్రింది విధంగా తీసుకోవచ్చు:
  • We had, OR
  • We would
But usually the main verb is in a different form, for example:
కానీ సాధారణంగా main verb వేరే రూపంలో ఉంటుంది, ఉదాహరణకు:
  • We had arrived (past participle) = మేము (అప్పటికే) చేరుకున్నాము.
  • We would arrive (base) = మేము చేరుకుంటాము.
It is always clear from the context.
ఇది సందర్భాన్ని బట్టి మనకు ఎల్లప్పుడూ స్పష్టమవుతుంది.

We often use the Past Perfect in reported speech after verbs like: said, told, asked, thought, wondered
Reported speechలో said, told, asked, thought, wondered వంటి క్రియల తర్వాత మనము తరచుగా Past Perfectను ఉపయోగిస్తాము.
